I planned to unveil these pins during Women’s History Month, but just missed it due to COVID-19 related shipping issues. Nonetheless, equal pay is an issue worth discussing in march and beyond. Overall, women earn 81.6 cents for every dollar a man earns (according to the most recent census data). For black and brown women, that percentage is even lower. After dealing with my own wage inequality dispute back in 2017, I decided to leave a toxic work environment and invest in my own creative endeavors.
It has not been easy making it as a female entrepreneur. Forty-five percent of new businesses fail within five years. The way I see it, however, if I am going to put in the maximum effort for minimum return and live paycheck to paycheck, I’ll do it while creating my own abundance, not someone else's. The current quarantine and massive job losses across the country have only solidified that I made the right choice by choosing me. Never again will I invest my time and energy (this is currency, Ladies!) in the false sense of security we get from 9-5s, and savings accounts. I determine what my value is.
Dear Employers, “You get what pay for” applies not only to what you charge for your services, but to what you pay your employees. So Fu$k you, pay us!
The Peacock Spot turns 3 this month and I look forward to many more years ahead. The stress, the anxiety, the highs and the lows. They're all worth it so long as they're spent serving my purpose.
Keep showing up, showing out and claiming what's yours.
